The initiative is designed to provide mothers with soft blankets made from 100 per cent cotton when they are discharged with their newborn babies from participating healthcare facilities. The distribution will also include information intended to support newborn care after discharge.
Education to accompany blanket distribution
According to the Angel Care Foundation, educational materials will address newborn care, warning signs that require attention and the importance of seeking postnatal healthcare in a timely manner.
The Foundation says the programme is intended to strengthen maternal health education and improve awareness of appropriate postnatal care. It also says that providing warmth, dignity and care to newborns can support maternal and child wellbeing and encourage healthier childcare practices.
The specific number of blankets planned for distribution in Sierra Leone has not been determined, and the healthcare facilities that will participate have not yet been identified.
Part of a wider African target
The Angel Blanket Initiative is described as the Foundation’s flagship programme. Sierra Leone is expected to become the second African country to benefit from it, following a reported launch in Accra, Ghana, on 25 June 2026.
The Foundation has set a target of distributing one million blankets to newborn babies across Africa within five years. It is also seeking support from organisations and development partners in areas including finance, medical assistance, logistics, materials, communications and institutional cooperation.
Partnerships, according to the programme’s stated plans, are expected to help reach mothers and newborns requiring additional support, particularly in communities where access to essential maternal and child healthcare services is difficult.
Foundation background
The Angel Care Foundation is a United States-based philanthropic and humanitarian organisation established in 2020 by Dr. Olivia Tchanque. Its stated areas of work include healthcare, education, water and sanitation, and humanitarian assistance.
The planned Freetown event will mark the initiative’s expansion to Sierra Leone. Further details on local partners, participating facilities and the scale of distribution are yet to be announced.
