APC's Kaifala Marah Urges SLPP to Respect Resolution-4 of National Unity Agreement
In a bid to uphold the principles of national unity and political reconciliation, Dr. Kaifala Marah, a senior figure in the main opposition All People's Congress (APC), has called upon the ruling Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) to honor Resolution-4 of the communiqué signed in October of the previous year.
Dr. Marah, who represents the APC at the Election Investigation Committee (EIC), conveyed this appeal during a press briefing held at the Brookfields Hotel in Freetown on Tuesday. Resolution-4 pertains to critical issues such as the release of political detainees, cessation of politically motivated prosecutions, and the resettlement of individuals displaced by political unrest.
Expressing disappointment at the apparent inaction from the SLPP since the signing of the communiqué, Dr. Marah urged the government, particularly the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), to collaborate closely with the tripartite committee to ensure timely progress on these matters.
The committee, tasked with investigating the June 24, 2023 elections and presenting recommendations to the government, was given a six-month timeframe, commencing from October of the previous year. Dr. Marah assured the public that the committee is committed to uncovering the truth and emphasized the importance of patience and restraint during this process.
Furthermore, Dr. Marah emphasized that the ruling party ought to have implemented certain recommendations sooner. He reiterated the APC's readiness to work in conjunction with the government and international partners to ensure the comprehensive implementation of the resolutions outlined in the agreement.
Responding on behalf of the government, Dr. Emmanuel Gaima underscored the significance of national harmony and unity, reaffirming President Bio's dedication to addressing the key resolutions outlined in the agreement. Dr. Gaima revealed that while the agreement for national unity comprises eight resolutions, the EIC's focus primarily revolves around Resolution-3, which involves reviewing contentious issues surrounding the June 24, 2023 elections and previous electoral processes.
However, Dr. Gaima unequivocally stated that there are no plans for a re-run election at present. He clarified that the current objective is to conduct a thorough review, as the committee lacks the mandate to request a re-run. Dr. Gaima reiterated the government's commitment to addressing electoral concerns and upholding democratic values conducive to national peace and stability.
