Chichester Harbour Endures 1,200+ Hours of Raw Sewage Discharge

Chichester Harbour, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in West Sussex, has experienced over 1,200 hours of raw sewage discharges in the past month, described by campaigners as an "assault on the environment." The discharges, documented by Southern Water's Beachbuoy system, occurred at storm overflows in Thornham and Bosham.

Campaigners and the CEO of Chichester Harbour Conservancy express concern over the environmental impact and call for urgent infrastructure improvements to prevent pollution. The conservancy group emphasizes the importance of maintaining good water quality for the protected habitats and wildlife in the harbor.

Despite Southern Water attributing the discharges to heavy rainfall from storms, campaigners argue that the prolonged sewage releases are unjustifiable and detrimental to the environment. Southern Water acknowledges the issue and states that reducing storm overflow releases is a top priority.
