Experts say 14% of adults worldwide are addicted to ultra processed foods

Experts say one in seven adults and one in eight children are at risk of being poisoned by ultra processed foods (UPF). This has led to calls for some products to be labeled as addictive.

Recent research has found that his UPF, such as ice cream, soda, and processed foods, is associated with poor health, including cancer, weight gain, and increased risk of heart disease. Consumption of these products is rapidly increasing globally, with UPF now making up more than half of the average diet in the UK and US.

Researchers are now finding that the way some people consume such foods may be linked to the diagnosis of substance use disorders. It may meet the criteria."

Behaviors that may meet these criteria include intense cravings, withdrawal symptoms, poor intake control, obesity, binge eating disorder, poor physical and mental health, and reduced quality of life. This includes continuing use despite consequences, the researchers said.

An analysis of 281 studies from 36 countries found that "addiction to highly processed foods" is estimated to be present in 14% of adults and 12% of children. the researchers wrote in the BMJ.

Scientists say the formal classification of some foods high in carbohydrates and fats as 'addictive' could help improve health through changes in social, clinical and political policy. Stated.

"There is consistent support for the validity and clinical relevance of food addiction," said Ashley Gearhart, corresponding author of the paper and professor of psychology at the University of Michigan.

"By recognizing that certain types of processed foods are addictive, we may be able to help improve global health."
