Sierra Leone’s Health Workers Lead Mpox Vaccination Drive as Outbreak Spreads

Health workers at Freetown’s 34 Military Hospital are leading the charge in Sierra Leone’s fight against mpox, as the country faces a growing outbreak of the viral disease. With over 477 reported cases and three deaths since January, the hospital—well-known for tackling Ebola, COVID-19, and Lassa Fever—is now the front line in the response effort.

In March, Sierra Leone received 61,300 doses of the mpox vaccine, with 58,300 supplied by Gavi and the rest donated by Ireland. These vaccines are being prioritized for frontline workers and close contacts of infected individuals. Over 100 health workers, dressed in scrubs and military uniforms, recently queued for their shots at 34 Military Hospital, a sign of growing confidence in the vaccine.

Dr. Adama Kamara, a military captain and Clinical Lead at the facility, noted that the vaccine caused only mild side effects. “Many health workers are coming to take the vaccine—there is no hesitancy,” she said.

As the virus begins spreading through communities, efforts are expanding. Patients beyond the hospital's capacity are now being treated at new centers in Police and Jui. Health authorities are working to break the chain of transmission with expanded testing, community engagement, and preventive measures like handwashing and face mask use.

Minister of Health Austin Demby emphasized the vaccine’s safety and personally received the jab to encourage public trust. The rollout targets individuals aged 12 and older in high-risk zones.

Sierra Leone is now the 14th African Union country to deploy the mpox vaccine, supported by the Africa CDC, WHO, and UNICEF. Authorities remain committed to containing the outbreak, with Director General of the National Public Health Agency, Prof. Foday Sahr, promising continued efforts to safeguard the nation.
