Connaught Hospital Organizes Voluntary Blood Drive to Boost Lifesaving Supplies
Connaught Hospital, the largest referral and teaching hospital in Freetown, is set to host a voluntary blood donation drive on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at its main blood bank. The initiative aims to increase the availability of blood for patients in urgent need.
The hospital's management, led by Dr. Mark I. Kapuwa and supported by Dr. Tejan Baryoh, is collaborating with the Desmond Lewis Voluntary Blood Donors Foundation to mobilize donors for the event. Dr. Kapuwa expressed his intention to replicate the spirit of voluntary donation seen in other parts of the country, such as Kenema, by encouraging more participation in Freetown.
The Foundation, named after Desmond Lewis—recognized as Sierra Leone’s highest lifetime blood donor with over 100 units—was created to inspire more citizens to donate. According to its Secretary General, Patrick Massaquoi, the drive is also a tribute to Lewis, with over fifty donors expected to take part.
Mr. Philip Kamara, manager of the hospital's blood bank, praised the leadership for improving the facility, noting efforts such as clearing waste around the bank and installing solar-powered systems. These changes, he said, reflect a broader commitment to quality healthcare.
Prominent donor Yalia Kamara thanked the hospital team for their support and urged the public to see blood donation as a shared responsibility. She emphasized that growing voluntary participation could reduce reliance on commercial donors.
The event highlights the hospital's ongoing commitment to healthcare improvement and the role of community support in saving lives.
