Sierra Leone Strengthens Response to Mpox Outbreak

Freetown – Sierra Leone is intensifying efforts to contain a growing mpox outbreak, with 18 confirmed cases since January 13, 2025. The country’s National Public Health Agency, in collaboration with health partners, is enhancing surveillance, case detection, and patient care to prevent further spread.

With support from the World Health Organization (WHO), emergency health workers are conducting active case searches and investigations. WHO previously trained over 200 healthcare workers in laboratory diagnostics, case management, and infection control, ensuring a swift response to the outbreak.

To bolster containment efforts, 61,300 vaccine doses will arrive in the coming weeks, supported by WHO, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and other partners. These vaccines will primarily target high-risk individuals, including healthcare workers. Public awareness campaigns are also underway to promote prevention and encourage medical consultation.

WHO has provided over $38,000 worth of laboratory supplies, protective equipment, and diagnostic tools, along with treatment kits for both inpatients and outpatients. The organization continues to offer technical support, helping Sierra Leone develop response strategies and treatment guidelines.

The mpox outbreak in Sierra Leone is part of a wider regional surge, with 22 African countries reporting cases since 2024. Health authorities remain committed to curbing the outbreak and safeguarding public health.
