Fire Erupts in Sierra Leone’s Presidential Building While President Is Abroad

A fire broke out on Saturday at Sierra Leone’s State House in central Freetown, affecting the third and fourth floors of the presidential building. President Julius Maada Bio was not in the country at the time, as he is currently attending a conference in Turkey.

According to an official statement, the president’s office on the second floor remained untouched by the flames. Emergency crews were deployed quickly to secure the building and prevent further damage.

The cause of the fire, which began around 4:00 PM, has not yet been determined. Video footage shared online showed flames bursting through the upper-floor windows of the large white structure, with thick black smoke rising into the sky.

Local residents reported seeing smoke and fire pouring from the top floors. Police cordoned off the surrounding streets while security forces and soldiers were seen at the scene to maintain order and assist emergency responders.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
