High-Profile Treason Case: Lawyer Ady Macauley Challenges Verdict

Lawyer Ady Macauley has voiced his surprise at the guilty verdict given to his clients, Emmanuel Salifu Kamara and ISP Ibrahim Sesay, in a notable treason trial.

Kamara and Sesay, former bodyguards of ex-President Ernest Bai Koroma, were among 11 people convicted for their roles in the attempted coup of November 2023.

Speaking to Voice of America, Macauley argued that the verdict did not align with the evidence. He questioned the prosecution's claim that Kamara communicated with the attackers during the coup. Macauley stated that Kamara’s phone records, examined by mobile operators, showed no such calls on the day in question.

Macauley refrained from commenting on the sentencing of Amadu Koita, the first accused, but noted that Koita was never a bodyguard to the former president.

Regarding the case against ex-President Koroma, Macauley mentioned that it is still in the preliminary stages in the Magistrate Court and will soon move to the High Court.

Koroma, currently receiving medical treatment in Nigeria, is expected to return to Sierra Leone to face the charges, Macauley added.

The guilty verdict and impending sentences have caused a significant stir in the nation, as those convicted face long prison terms.
