At the 2024 Sierra Leone Innovates Tech Summit, President Julius Maada Bio underscored the nation's dedication to technological progress and digital inclusivity. A highlight of the summit was the official launch of the StarLink Internet Service in Sierra Leone, marking a significant step in the country’s digital transformation.

In his address, President Bio emphasized the critical role of the newly available internet service for national development. "Ladies and gentlemen, today we all witnessed the official launching of the StarLink Internet Service at this summit, which underscores our commitment to providing every citizen with access to the internet and the opportunities available online," he stated. He urged citizens to utilize this new resource for constructive purposes that foster progress and innovation rather than for unproductive activities. “Use that for development and not for gossiping. Use that for development and not for threatening national security,” he stressed.

The theme of the summit revolved around leveraging technology for national growth. President Bio reiterated that as one of the least developed countries, Sierra Leone must capitalize on every opportunity to advance. “All we want in development is our preoccupation as one of the least developing countries is to latch on to every opportunity available,” he asserted.

StarLink, a satellite internet constellation constructed by SpaceX, promises to significantly enhance internet connectivity across Sierra Leone, particularly in rural and underserved areas. This initiative aligns with the government's broader strategy to bridge the digital divide and foster a more inclusive digital economy.

The summit gathered government officials, tech entrepreneurs, and representatives from various sectors, all echoing the president’s sentiments on the pivotal role of internet access in modernizing Sierra Leone. The launch of StarLink is viewed as a transformative step that will open new possibilities for education, business, and governance in the country.

Attendees were enthusiastic about the potential impact of improved internet connectivity on Sierra Leone's socio-economic landscape. The government’s collaboration with SpaceX to bring StarLink to Sierra Leone is expected to accelerate the nation's digital transformation, making internet access more equitable and enabling the population to participate in the global digital economy.

In conclusion, President Bio’s address at the Sierra Leone Innovates Tech Summit highlighted the significant strides the nation is making toward technological advancement. The launch of StarLink Internet Service is a testament to Sierra Leone's commitment to digital inclusivity and national development, setting a promising trajectory for the country's future.
