Providence to Battle International High School in CGSL National Debate Championship Grand Final
The Providence International School Ltd is set to compete against the International High School in the Grand Final of the Chozen Generation Sierra Leone National Debate Championship for Girls. This highly anticipated event marks the culmination of the third edition of the annual National Debating Championship for girls, organized by Chozen Generation Sierra Leone in collaboration with the MariGold Initiative.
This year's competition saw 24 girls' schools from across Sierra Leone participating in a rigorous series of debates held in Freetown. The format followed the British parliamentary style, known for its emphasis on logic, eloquence, and critical thinking. Among the notable participants were St. Joseph Senior School, Methodist Girls High School, Anne-Walsh Secondary School, and the International Secondary School, each bringing strong teams to the tournament.
In preparation for the debates, a comprehensive training program was conducted for all participating schools to familiarize students with the format and expectations of the championship. This training aimed to ensure that all contestants were well-equipped to engage in high-level intellectual discourse.
The official launch of the debate took place at the Africell American Corner on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. Madam Millicent Kargbo, Deputy Communications Director of the Human Rights Commission, inaugurated the event, highlighting this year’s theme: “Amplify Her Voice: Young Girls in the Arena of Ideas.” This theme underscores the importance of empowering young women to articulate their ideas confidently and persuasively.
The debate series began earlier in May 2024 and has spanned an entire month, featuring intense rounds of competition. Schools battled it out through various stages, with each round eliminating teams and bringing the top contenders closer to the grand finale.
As the championship approaches its climax, the final showdown between Providence International School Ltd and International High School promises to be a thrilling contest. Both schools have demonstrated exceptional debating skills, and the final debate is expected to be a showcase of intellectual prowess and eloquence.
The winners of the championship will be awarded attractive prizes, recognizing their hard work and dedication throughout the competition. Additionally, individual debaters who have shown outstanding performance will also receive accolades.
The National Debate Championship for Girls not only provides a platform for young women to showcase their debating skills but also aims to foster a culture of critical thinking, public speaking, and leadership among the youth. As the final debate approaches, the anticipation and excitement continue to build, promising an engaging and inspiring event for all involved.
