"Renowned Sierra Leonean Psychiatrist, Dr. Edward Nahim, Remembered for Decades of Dedication to Mental Health and Post-Conflict Healing"

In Memoriam: Sierra Leone Mourns the Passing of Renowned Psychiatrist, Dr. Edward Nahim

Sierra Leone was met with sorrow on January 1, 2024, as it bid farewell to Dr. Edward Nahim, a prominent figure in the field of psychiatry. Dr. Nahim's contributions spanned over four decades, and his legacy was felt not only within the realm of mental health but also in the broader context of post-conflict recovery and public service.

As the sole psychiatrist at the Kissy Mental Hospital, colloquially known as 'Crase Yard,' Dr. Nahim played a pivotal role in the nation's mental health landscape. The hospital, established in 1827, stands as the first institution of its kind on the African continent. Since 1981, Dr. Nahim served as the head of the hospital, tending to a diverse range of patients, including those grappling with drug abuse, epilepsy, mental disabilities, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depression, and schizophrenia.

Beyond his clinical duties, Dr. Nahim was actively involved in the rehabilitation of child and adult soldiers following Sierra Leone's ten-year civil war. His compassionate approach and expertise earned him several key positions, including Consultant to the Government of Sierra Leone, Director of Sierra Leone Psychiatric Hospital, and Medical and Dental Registrar.

One of Dr. Nahim's notable contributions was to the World Health Organization's Rapid Assessment of Mental Health Needs of Refugees, Displaced, and Other Populations Affected by Conflict and Post-Conflict Situations. His efforts were acknowledged in 2004 when he received the Commander of the Order of Rokel (COR), the second-highest civilian award in Sierra Leone.

The passing of Dr. Edward Nahim leaves a void in Sierra Leone's mental health landscape, but his enduring impact on the well-being of individuals and the nation as a whole will be remembered with gratitude and respect. The outpouring of condolences and tributes from across the country is a testament to the indelible mark he left on the hearts and minds of many. May his soul rest in perfect peace.
