Sierra Leone and Egypt Sign Agreement on Fishing, Aquaculture, and Trade Cooperation

On October 12, 2024, Sierra Leone and Egypt took a significant step toward advancing their fishing and aquaculture industries by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement establishes a framework for collaboration aimed at promoting sustainable fishing practices and boosting trade between the two nations.

 

 

The MoU was signed by Princess Dougba, Sierra Leone's Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, and General Islam Abdel Hamid Attia Rayan, Chairman of the National Company for Fisheries and Aquaculture of Egypt. It outlines key objectives such as improving post-harvest handling, enhancing fish product value, and facilitating mutual market access for both countries. The agreement also emphasizes capacity-building initiatives, joint research in aquaculture technologies, and installing monitoring systems on fishing vessels.

 

During the signing ceremony, Princess Dougba highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating that it aligns with Sierra Leone's goals for sustainable practices and economic growth. She expressed excitement about the opportunities the collaboration will bring, particularly in enhancing livelihoods and food security.

 

General Islam Attia echoed her sentiments, noting that the MoU represents a shared commitment to sustainable resource management and trade development. Both sides expressed optimism about the future outcomes of this cooperation, which aims to strengthen the fishing and aquaculture sectors while benefiting the communities of both countries.

 

Moving forward, the parties will develop an implementation plan with specific initiatives and timelines to ensure the effective realization of the MoU’s objectives. This agreement marks a milestone in the economic relationship between Sierra Leone and Egypt, with the potential for long-term growth and prosperity in the fishing and aquaculture sectors.
