Sierra Leone Gets Approval to Host CAF Women’s Champions League

Sierra Leone has been officially approved to host the 2024 WAFU Zone A Women’s Champions League qualifiers. This significant announcement was made by WAFU Zone A Executive Director Mapathe Gaye, following a successful inspection of the facilities in Bo City. The inspection team was satisfied with the stadium, training pitches, and accommodation arrangements.

The tournament is scheduled to take place from August 2nd to 11th, 2024. It will feature 6-8 champion clubs from WAFU A member associations, who will compete for regional honors. This event marks an important milestone for Sierra Leone, showcasing its capability to host international sporting events and boosting its profile in the African football community.

In other news related to WAFU Zone A activities, Guinea and Senegal have expressed interest in hosting the WAFU A U17 zonal qualifiers. This comes after The Gambia withdrew from hosting due to logistical issues, notably the absence of an MRI scan machine in Banjul. The new host for the U17 qualifiers, which are a precursor to the CAF U17 tournament, will be announced in the coming weeks. These qualifiers were initially set for October 20th to November 3rd, 2024, in The Gambia.

This development is a testament to the growing interest and investment in women’s football across the region, reflecting a broader trend of increased support for female athletes in Africa. Sierra Leone’s hosting of the Women’s Champions League qualifiers is expected to inspire young female footballers and contribute to the development of the sport in the country and the region at large.
