Suspected Fraudulent Lawyer Appears in Court

Claude Cambell, accused of masquerading as a lawyer, was granted bail of Le400,000 after appearing before Magistrate Santigie Bangura at Pademba Road Court No. 2 in Freetown.

Cambell is charged with obtaining money by false pretenses, accused of defrauding businessman Daniel Gbembo out of Le401,330. The case involves an alleged fraudulent promise to supply Gbembo with 2,400 bags of cement, 5.5 tons of iron rods, 1,000 hardboards, and 45 liters of varnish. If convicted, Cambell could face penalties under section 32(1) of the 1916 Larceny Act.

During the court hearing, the prosecution’s primary witness, Daniel Gbembo, identified Cambell and described their initial meeting on April 20, 2024, at Gbembo’s shop on Main Motor Road, Grafton. Cambell, posing as Barrister Claude Cambell, claimed to represent a client selling building materials before moving to Canada. Gbembo agreed to the transaction, receiving receipts bearing a signature and the "Esq" logo, which Cambell explained was exclusive to lawyers.

The deception was uncovered when CID officers informed Gbembo a month later that the goods were stolen. Cambell initially assured Gbembo he would resolve the issue but became unreachable. CID officers eventually arrested Cambell and recorded his statement.

Magistrate Bangura granted Cambell bail under strict conditions, including two sureties who must each operate businesses worth at least Le400,000, provide bank statements, and own property in the Western Urban District of Freetown valued at no less than Le400,000. The sureties must also present valid identification, such as passports, national identity cards, and driver’s licenses. Bail approval is pending by the Master and Registrar.
