Sierra Leone Government Extends Support to Families of Fallen Service Men Following Failed Coup

In a commendable move, the Government of Sierra Leone has provided substantial financial assistance to the families of service members who lost their lives during the attempted coup on November 26th, 2023. The sum of one hundred million old Leones was distributed during a ceremony held on January 19th, 2024, at the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces headquarters in Freetown.

Major General Dauda Alpha, the substantive commander of the joint force, expressed sincere gratitude for the government's support, highlighting its timely response to the grief experienced by the bereaved families. The compensation not only included a significant financial contribution but also an extension of their stay at various barracks for an additional six months.

Major General Alpha emphasized the government's compassion, attributing the decision to the dedication demonstrated by the deceased individuals in defending the nation. He announced an intention to enhance joint force policies, ensuring that benefits are extended to the families on a flagship basis, regardless of the rank and file of the deceased.

As part of this initiative, the families will receive six months of continuous salary payments, coupled with the privilege of staying in the barracks during this period. Major General Alpha urged all service men and women to uphold professionalism and adhere to regimental values, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts to achieve common goals.

Aminata Bangura, widow of one of the fallen service members, expressed gratitude on behalf of others for the government's support during this challenging time. She appealed for additional assistance, specifically requesting scholarship support for the children of the deceased service members, addressing the financial difficulties faced by widows in providing for their families.

The government's commitment to addressing the needs of these families was further underscored by Major General Alpha's announcement, reflecting a holistic approach to support beyond immediate financial relief.

It is heartening to witness the government's recognition of the sacrifices made by the service members and their families, reflecting a commitment to both honor their memory and provide tangible support during these trying times. The extension of benefits and financial aid showcases a thoughtful response to the challenges faced by the families of those who gave their lives in defense of the nation.
