Sierra Leone Police Enhance Maritime Security with Commissioning of 15-Seater Speed Boat for Bonthe Island
In a significant move to reinforce security measures and extend support to riverine areas, the Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, led the commissioning of fifteen 15-seater speed boats for Bonthe Island and its surrounding regions. The initiative, facilitated through the Executive Management Board (EMB), marks a strategic effort to enhance law enforcement capabilities in maritime security.
The absence of a dedicated speed boat in Bonthe Island has long been a concern, both for the local community and law enforcement personnel operating in the region. Recognizing the critical need for such an asset, IGP Sellu, during the commissioning ceremony held on January 10th, 2024, emphasized his commitment to serving and safeguarding the people of Sierra Leone.
"The primary goal of my leadership is to ensure the safety and protection of the lives and properties of the citizens of Sierra Leone," asserted IGP Sellu, underlining the significance of this initiative in achieving that objective.
Understanding the importance of community involvement in maintaining and maximizing the use of the newly acquired speed boats, Sellu urged the residents of Bonthe to take collective responsibility for their upkeep. This approach ensures sustained functionality for the benefit of the entire community.
High-ranking officials from the Sierra Leone Police, including Assistant Inspector General of Police Mr. Brima Kanneh and Chief Superintendent of Police Mr. Augustine Kabia, echoed IGP Sellu's sentiments. They emphasized the pivotal role these speed boats would play in enhancing security measures and addressing crime challenges within the region.
Deputy Mayor Daniel S. Bangalie expressed gratitude on behalf of the community, assuring the IGP that the speed boats would be utilized purposefully for their intended objectives. Additionally, support from Maritime Officer South, Mr. Lawrence Conteh, who promptly provided ten life jackets, underscored the commitment to safety measures while utilizing the new maritime resources.
The commissioning event drew various stakeholders, including representatives from civil society and the Local Policing Partnership Board (LPPB). They lauded the Sierra Leone Police for this unprecedented gesture, marking a significant milestone in addressing the region's security needs.
As Sierra Leone continues to prioritize safety and security, the commissioning of these speed boats stands as a testament to the proactive measures undertaken by law enforcement authorities to safeguard both coastal and riverine areas. This initiative contributes significantly to enhancing the overall security infrastructure and capabilities of Sierra Leone Police in fulfilling their mandate.
