
"Sierra Leonean Government Inaugurates Barge Ferry at Bumpeh, Easing Transportation Woes Ahead of Bridge Construction"
In a significant move aimed at addressing local transportation challenges, the Sierra Leonean government, represented by the Minister of Works and Public Assets, Dr. Denis Sandy, and the Minister of Lands, Dr. Turad Senesie, officially commissioned the Berge ferry at Bumpeh. This development comes as a timely Christmas gift to the people of Bumpeh, providing a temporary solution to crossing and transportation issues until the anticipated bridge construction commences in early 2024.
Expressing warm greetings from President Bio to the residents of Bumpeh and Bonth District, Minister Sandy highlighted the special assignment given by the President to find a swift resolution to the crossing challenges before the festive season. The government's response involved the formation of a dedicated committee comprising the Ministries of Works, Lands, Finance, and the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA). Driven by a commitment to action, the government officials visited the site repeatedly, securing necessary funds and overseeing the assembly of the Barge ferry in Bumpeh.
The operational barge, which commenced its services five days prior to the commissioning, is expected to address immediate transportation needs until the construction of the bridge begins. Minister Sandy expressed his joy in representing President Bio to commission the barge, emphasizing the government's dedication to delivering tangible solutions to the community.
Dr. Turad Senesie, the Minister of Land, echoed the President's instructions to oversee projects in Bonthe and Moyamba. Commending the collaborative efforts of Dr. Sandy and emphasizing the government's commitment to ongoing road projects, Dr. Turad assured the people of Bonthe District that the bridge would soon become a reality. He pledged continued monitoring and collaboration to bring development to all districts in the country.
During the ceremony, community members, led by Patrick H. Walker, performed a customary libation ceremony to express gratitude. Mr. Walker, acknowledging the government's respect for the people, praised the ministers for their dedication and noted that the commissioning ceremony, including a traditional libation for deceased elders, symbolized this respect.
Senior Engineer Paul H. Lebbie, representing the Director General of SLRA, highlighted the agency's role in providing economical access to the people. He assured periodic visits during the upcoming bridge construction and affirmed SLRA's commitment to fulfilling promises made to the community.
