UNDP Empowers Communities in Sierra Leone to Build Resilience and Reduce Poverty

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is making significant strides in empowering communities in Sierra Leone to enhance resilience and reduce poverty through innovative initiatives. A key example is the Human Security Project, implemented across the Gbense, Soa, and Kamara Chiefdoms in Kono District as part of a three-year effort. This project uses a Human Security approach to address the root causes of insecurity and poverty in these communities.

By focusing on human security, defined as the protection of individuals' rights, livelihoods, and dignity, the project aims to create a safer and more stable environment. A core aspect is its commitment to supporting people with disabilities, ensuring equal access to resources and opportunities. This inclusive approach strengthens community resilience by empowering all members.

One success story is Mariama Brima, who once begged on the streets of Koidu City but now thrives as an entrepreneur. Thanks to UNDP's support, she owns a small shop and has acquired soap-making skills, enabling her to provide for her family. Mariama joined a cooperative in Gbense Chiefdom, which has improved her financial status, allowing her to save regularly and access loans to grow her business.

Another vital component of the project is the promotion of financial inclusion through Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs). These associations provide members with affordable credit to start or expand businesses. Hawa Sogbeh, Chair Lady of a VSLA in Kamara Chiefdom, shared how the program has transformed their lives by providing the means to invest in businesses and support families.

Additionally, 600 VSLA members across the three chiefdoms have received training in value-added agriculture and environmental impact, enhancing their knowledge and resource management. The project also offers skills training in areas like agriculture and small business management, helping participants create sustainable livelihoods. Aiah Sesay, a graduate of the skills training program in Koidu Town, now runs a successful welding business and supports his family.

By integrating support for persons with disabilities, financial inclusion, and skills training, the Human Security project contributes significantly to poverty reduction in Kono District. This comprehensive approach not only addresses immediate needs but also empowers communities to build resilience against future challenges.

Through its efforts, UNDP is fostering a more resilient and prosperous future for Sierra Leoneans, offering opportunities for sustainable development and community growth.
