VP Jalloh Highlights Sierra Leone’s Role in Global Peacebuilding at Fambul Tok International Conference

Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, the Vice President of Sierra Leone, officially opened the Constellating Peace Conference, organized by Fambul Tok International and Catalyst for Peace, in Tokeh, Freetown. In his keynote address, he commended the event for gathering peace leaders from across the globe, emphasizing Sierra Leone's remarkable transformation from a post-war state to a nation dedicated to sustainable peace.

Jalloh acknowledged the ongoing efforts in peacebuilding, driven by community engagement and grassroots development, stating, "Our country has progressively rebuilt itself after the devastation of civil war." He stressed the significance of citizenship and community development in Sierra Leone's peace process, noting the country’s evolution into a global peace model.

The conference featured remarks from Manty Tarawalli, Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President, who highlighted the vital role of women in maintaining peace within communities. She emphasized that women are central to ensuring peace is not merely a written agreement but a way of life.

Attendees viewed a film about the Fambul Tok Peace Process, followed by a joint presentation by John Caulker, Executive Director of Fambul Tok, and Libby Hoffman, President of Catalyst for Peace. Caulker discussed the People’s Planning Process, integral to the Wan Fambul National Framework, pointing out that solutions to peacebuilding are rooted in the communities themselves. Hoffman added that "real power is in lived goodness," underscoring the resilience of Sierra Leone as an inspiration for the world.

Tamba Lamina, Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, praised the collaboration between the government and Fambul Tok, noting its transformative effect on development planning. He stated that the process has not only restored peace but has also enhanced governance at the community level.

Throughout the conference, participants will engage in workshops and discussions to explore traditional peace practices and governance models, focusing on how local engagement can be integrated into national strategies. The Vice President's address underscored the collective role of Sierra Leone and its communities in promoting peace, with Caulker referring to the gathering as a "celebration of hearts dedicated to peace," highlighting Sierra Leone's status as a beacon of hope and resilience for the global community.
