Workshop Strengthens Implementation of Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act

The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, in partnership with UN Women Sierra Leone, has launched a two-day workshop aimed at refining action plans for the effective implementation of the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act. The event, held at Regimanuel Gray’s Estate, brought together key stakeholders to enhance gender-focused initiatives.

Assistant Director Bamie J. Sesay outlined the workshop’s objectives, emphasizing the importance of developing gender-responsive strategies within government institutions. He encouraged participants to create innovative and practical approaches to gender mainstreaming while fostering collaboration across various ministries and agencies.

UN Women’s Baindu Massaquoi reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting gender initiatives, stressing the need for policies that integrate clear gender mainstreaming indicators. She described the action plan as a crucial tool for assessing progress and ensuring the successful implementation of the GEWE Act.

Director of Planning and Policy Ibrahim Kamara presented the GEWE National Plan (2025-2029), highlighting its alignment with previous regional consultations and its framework for increasing women's participation in leadership, public office, and the private sector.

The first day of discussions led to key recommendations, including raising awareness about gender mainstreaming, developing targeted programs to address gender disparities, strengthening inter-agency collaboration, and advancing policies that empower women and promote equal opportunities.

As the workshop continues, stakeholders remain committed to refining the GEWE implementation framework, ensuring long-term progress in gender equality and women’s empowerment across Sierra Leone.
