50/50 Group Demands Immediate Action Against Domestic Violence After Sia Kamara's Death
On August 19, 2024, the 50/50 Group Sierra Leone, a prominent civil society organization, issued a strong call to the government to take decisive measures against gender-based violence following the tragic death of Sia Kamara. Reflecting on Kamara's death and the removal of Monica Yenni Galiwa from her home due to similar violence, the group emphasized the urgency of addressing domestic violence, which has become a deeply concerning issue in the country.
The 50/50 Group highlighted that gender-based violence is not new in Sierra Leone, pointing to data from 2022 by Afrobarometer, which identified it as the most critical issue affecting women. They expressed their condolences to Sia Kamara's family and urged for robust measures to protect women and children from violence in their homes.
While the group acknowledged previous legal reforms, including President Bio's 2019 declaration of rape as a national emergency and the subsequent strengthening of the Sexual Offences Act, they stressed the need for continued efforts. They called for a national conversation on how to support women in abusive situations and create safe spaces for them.
The 50/50 Group also urged the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs to take immediate action, ensuring that shelters, legal aid, and counseling services are accessible to victims. They called for increased awareness of domestic abuse signs and the support available, as well as swift and decisive responses from the Sierra Leone Police to prevent further tragedies.
In their statement, the group declared that violence against women is a grave violation of human rights and should not be tolerated in any form, including in political contexts, as seen in ongoing incidents involving women candidates in Kono District's Chieftaincy elections.
