Canada-Based Sierra Leonean Tragically Killed in Freetown Hit-and-Run

Samuel James Decker, a Sierra Leonean residing in Winnipeg, Canada, tragically lost his life in Freetown on December 10, 2024, following a hit-and-run accident.

Decker, fondly called “Sammy,” had returned to Sierra Leone to celebrate the holiday season. After the accident, he was rushed to a hospital in Lumley, where he received medical attention. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries despite the efforts made to save him.

Family and friends in Canada have expressed grief and frustration, claiming the hospital gave misleading assurances about his recovery. The incident has reignited debates about the state of healthcare in Sierra Leone, with criticism over alleged prioritization of profit over patient care.

Decker is survived by his wife, Rosaline, his children, and many loved ones in Sierra Leone and abroad. His passing has left a deep void in the lives of those who knew him.
