CHRDI Urges Sierra Leone and Guinea to Resolve Border Dispute and Protect Citizens’ Rights
Fatorma Abdul, the Executive Director of Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI), has called on the governments of Sierra Leone and Guinea to resolve their ongoing border dispute. He emphasized the importance of finding a peaceful solution that ensures the protection of human rights for citizens affected by the conflict.
In a statement issued on Monday, Abdul urged both nations to adhere to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Protocol, which guarantees the right to free movement across member states. He stressed that the governments must prioritize their citizens' fundamental rights and comply with international laws that protect freedom of travel.
Abdul also called on citizens of both countries to respect each other’s laws, promoting mutual understanding and cooperation. He condemned reports of unlawful arrests, forced deportations, and harassment, urging the authorities to cease such actions and ensure the safety and freedom of movement for all individuals.
The appeal comes amid rising tensions along the Sierra Leone-Guinea border, with travel disruptions affecting residents. Prolonged hostilities, experts warn, could worsen the humanitarian and economic challenges in the region. CHRDI's statement underscores the urgency of dialogue between both governments and adherence to regional frameworks designed to promote peace and stability.
