Civil Society Activist Defends Police Handling of Dutch Journalist’s Case

Civil society activist Daniel Pewah has voiced support for the Sierra Leone Police following their detention of Dutch journalist Sophie van Leeuwen on charges of espionage and related offenses.

Van Leeuwen’s arrest sparked public debate, especially as it followed reports of Dutch national Jos Leijdekkers, a suspected drug trafficker, being seen in Sierra Leone. Many questioned whether the two incidents were connected.

Pewah defended the police’s actions, stating that security forces have the right to question individuals if their activities raise concerns. He assured the public that the initial investigation found no evidence of criminal intent in van Leeuwen’s work.

Despite her release, reports indicate that some of her electronic devices were confiscated as part of the investigation. Additionally, police have impounded a vehicle linked to her local fixer, a journalist, at the Criminal Investigation Department headquarters in Freetown.

Meanwhile, another prominent journalist, Sylvia Blyden, has spoken in van Leeuwen’s defense, dismissing suspicions about her visit. She also shared a message exchange with van Leeuwen clarifying her purpose in Sierra Leone.

While the details of the case remain unclear, rights groups have called on authorities to ensure press freedom and fair treatment of journalists.
