Fishing Ban Triggers Humanitarian Crisis in Kambia District
Thousands of residents in Kambia District’s fishing communities are facing severe hunger and hardship due to a one-month fishing ban imposed by the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources.
The ministry had promised relief measures, but those assurances remain unfulfilled, leaving families struggling to survive.
Communities such as Yeliboya Island, Kortimor Island, Mahable Island, Makompa, Sasiyek, Mayorow, Makuma, and Rokai are among the hardest hit. Many boat owners have fled to Guinea in search of food and work, while those who remain face worsening conditions without any support.
The crisis has also disrupted education, as parents take their children to Guinea to escape starvation, leaving schools empty.
Local civil society groups, media, Paramount Chiefs, and other stakeholders are calling on the government to intervene immediately to prevent further suffering and potential loss of life.
