Freetown City Council Begins Demolition of Illegal Structures in Kroo Bay
On Friday, August 9th, the Freetown City Council (FCC) initiated the demolition of illegal structures built on reclaimed land in the Kroo Bay area. The FCC explained that this reclaimed land, formed by waste deposits, has been a significant source of pollution for the ocean and nearby beaches. Additionally, residents living on these lands are at high risk of flooding and being swept into the ocean by high tides.
In the weeks leading up to the demolition, the FCC engaged in numerous community discussions with the residents affected. As part of its efforts to restore the environment, the FCC will involve over 200 residents of Kroo Bay, including those displaced by the demolition, in a year-long project to plant 75,000 mangroves in the community. This initiative, funded by the World Bank, is part of the broader FreetownTheTreeTown project aimed at environmental sustainability.
