Freetown City Council Embarks on Comprehensive Rehabilitation of Cemeteries

On January 3, 2024, Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyer of the Freetown City Council (FCC) unveiled a strategic plan for the phased rehabilitation of the city's cemeteries. Emphasizing the significance of cemeteries as the final resting places, Mayor Aki-Sawyer expressed a determined commitment to overcoming challenges faced during her first term in office.

Deputy Mayor Kweku Lisk Esq. is spearheading this initiative, collaborating closely with the Chief Administrator, relevant FCC Council Committees and Departments, and cemetery clerks. To evaluate the progress, Deputy Mayor Lisk, accompanied by Councillors Zainab Conteh and Samuel Kamara, conducted visits to four cemeteries on New Year's Day: Congo Town, Circular Road, Kissy Road, and Race Course.

While Mayor Aki-Sawyer acknowledged that the project is in its early stages, she expressed optimism about significant improvements in the coming months. She also extended gratitude to Christian Dauda for supporting the rehabilitation of Ascension Town Cemetery during her absence, showcasing a collaborative effort between the city council and the wider community.
