High Court to Hear Alleged FGM Manslaughter Case
The case concerning the alleged manslaughter of Kadiatu Bangura and Salamatu Jalloh, linked to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) practices in Kabailor and Bubuya Villages, has been escalated to the High Court in Port Loko. Magistrate George B. Samai of the Kambia Magistrate Court made the decision after a preliminary investigation that involved testimonies from five key witnesses, including medical professionals.
The defendants, charged with conspiracy and manslaughter, did not enter a plea due to the seriousness of the charges. Despite the defense's request for a dismissal of the charges, Magistrate Samai denied the application and granted bail, acknowledging the defendants' consistent court attendance. The case now moves to the High Court, where final judgment will be rendered.
State Counsel Lawyer Tenneh Tonia Smart expressed her satisfaction with the court's decision, emphasizing the importance of pursuing justice for the victims. Ishmael Cole, Programme Manager of the Forum Against Harmful Practices (FAHP), highlighted the significance of this case in the fight against FGM in Sierra Leone, noting that it is the first FGM-related case to reach the High Court. Cole reaffirmed the organization's commitment to ending FGM, expressing gratitude to those who have supported the cause.
