In a proactive response to the escalating issue of drug abuse among the youth in Pujehun District, the Human Rights Committee on Drug Abuse orchestrated a crucial sensitization meeting in Pujehun town. The event, hosted at the Civil Society Secretariat on 37 Military Barrack Road, sought to actively engage various youth groups, including Ataya Bases, Ghettos, Okada Riders, and other Community-Based Organizations within the township.
Chairman Emmanuel Fawundu, leading the Committee, stressed the urgency of this initiative, shedding light on the detrimental effects of drug abuse on the lives of young individuals. Established in June of the previous year, the Committee's overarching mission revolves around safeguarding citizens' rights, particularly during festive seasons.
Comprised of diverse civil society organizations within Pujehun District, the Committee operates both at the local and national levels, advocating for the protection and defense of human rights. Fawundu articulated the Committee's vision for a drug-free society, calling on participants to disseminate this critical message among their peers. The primary focus remains on steering away from harmful substances like Kush and Tramadol, promoting a healthier and drug-free lifestyle.
Agnes K. Brima, a participant benefiting from the sensitization meeting, commended the initiative, highlighting the prevalence of drug addiction among Sierra Leone's youth. She emphasized the urgent need for young people to abstain from drug abuse, underscoring its adverse impact on mental well-being.
The session concluded with a strong call-to-action, urging attendees to actively combat drug abuse and fulfill their responsibilities as citizens in creating a safer, drug-free environment for the youth in Pujehun District.
