Kandeh Yumkella Hosts Irish Climate Envoy to Boost Clean Cooking and Carbon Financing in Africa

Kandeh Yumkella, Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Food Security, hosted the Irish Climate Envoy on Friday, 17th May 2024, to advance clean cooking and carbon financing initiatives in Africa.

The meeting, led by Irish Climate Envoy Sinead Walsh, focused on the outcomes of the recent Clean Cooking Summit in Paris and support for the Clean Cooking Delivering Unit. This initiative is key to enhancing development in the clean cooking sector across the continent.

Their discussion also covered the topic of carbon financing for Africa. They explored the appropriate timing and venues to initiate conversations on fair carbon pricing and community rights to carbon credits. Yumkella highlighted the progress made by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in developing regulations for a credible and transparent carbon trading system in the country.

The parties further agreed to collaborate at the global level to advance these issues in partnership with the growing community of climate envoys. They underscored the need for innovative financing mechanisms to support climate action on the African continent.

This collaboration aims to bolster efforts towards sustainable development and climate resilience, demonstrating a unified commitment to addressing pressing environmental challenges through effective and inclusive strategies.
