Minister of Sports Leads Government Delegation to Assess FIFA Turf Projects at Sierra Leone Football Academy

On January 26, 2024, Sierra Leone witnessed a significant development in its sports infrastructure as a high-powered government delegation, spearheaded by the Minister of Sports, Madam Augusta James-Teima, and the Executive Director of the National Sports Authority, Dr. Kenneth Brima, undertook a visit to the Sierra Leone Football Academy ground. The primary purpose of this visit was to assess the progress of the FIFA Artificial Turf Projects being implemented nationwide.

The government delegation, comprising senior officials from both the Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Authority, included Deputy Executive Director Dr. Abdulrahaman Swaray, Director of Participation Steven Keifala, Director of Cooperation Alie Sesay, Director of the National Institute of Sport Victor Hasten Spain, and Director of Sports Haroun Korji.

During the visit, Acting General Secretary of the Sierra Leone Football Association, Mohamed Benson Bawoh, provided an update to the government officials. He conveyed that the SLFA is on the verge of completing the construction of four standard artificial turf pitches. These pitches are located at the SLFA Academy and Approved School in Freetown, Port Loko Town Field, and the Coronation Field in Bo. Bawoh outlined a target deadline of March-end for the completion of these projects, emphasizing that the Koidu Field and Kenema City Field would also undergo renovation and receive floodlight installations.

Notable features of the completed pitches include a perimeter fence, installed floodlights, a 100-seater pavilion, and a 100 KVA generator at each playing venue.

Minister of Sports Madam James-Teima expressed her excitement over the swift progress in the country's football infrastructure, particularly commending the ongoing construction of FIFA Artificial Turf Pitches. She reassured the Football Association of the government's steadfast support for all football developmental activities within and beyond Sierra Leone.

This visit stands as a testament to the government's commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure and creating a conducive environment for football development. The completion of these artificial turf projects, equipped with modern facilities, is poised to elevate the standards of football in Sierra Leone and provide a platform for nurturing young talent.

As the government continues to emphasize its support for sports development, it signals a collaborative effort to propel football in the country to new heights. With the set deadline for completion approaching, the football community eagerly anticipates the positive impact these upgraded facilities will have on the overall football landscape in Sierra Leone.
