Minister Orders Immediate Evacuation of UNIMTECH Building Due to Safety Concerns

Dr. Turad Senesie, the Minister of Lands, Housing, and Country Planning, has directed the University of Management and Technology (UNIMTECH) to vacate a seven-story building, citing it as a significant safety risk. The decision was made during a critical meeting on August 14, 2024, at the Ministry’s Youyi Building office.

Dr. Senesie emphasized that the building, which accommodates around 5,000 students, poses a severe threat due to its unsafe structure. He revealed that the construction lacked the necessary permits and approved architectural and structural plans, raising serious regulatory concerns.

The Minister has ordered an immediate suspension of all academic activities within the building and demanded its prompt evacuation. He assured UNIMTECH management of support in securing an alternative location for the university and announced plans for a comprehensive technical assessment of the building. This evaluation will involve independent engineers, the Sierra Leone Institute of Engineers, and other experts.

Dr. Senesie stressed the importance of adhering to safety regulations, reiterating the government's commitment to protecting citizens from potential hazards linked to unsafe buildings.
