NGC Upholds Commitment to Constitutionality and Internal Democracy Amidst Police Intrusion
The National Grand Coalition (NGC) has voiced its dismay over the recent disruption of its Constitutional quarterly NEC meeting by the Sierra Leone Police, labeling it as an infringement upon national democratic principles and the right to assemble.
As a registered political entity, the NGC emphasizes that the NEC meeting is in line with its Constitutional obligation to convene quarterly. The gathering aimed to solidify the NGC's decision to withdraw from its alliance with the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), following internal discord within the NGC regarding the continuation of the alliance. However, the meeting faced interference as police dispersed the party members who convened in Freetown for the National Executive Council (NEC) assembly on Friday.
NGC leadership confirms that leading up to the NEC session, certain individuals allegedly affiliated with the ruling SLPP attempted to obstruct the meeting to maintain the alliance status with the SLPP. Despite their efforts, the NGC proceeded with the meeting.
During the NEC session, disputes arose, including challenges to the representation by elected Deputy Chairpersons for absent district chairpersons. To facilitate the meeting's progress, the NGC Chairman accommodated these demands. However, when one deputy chairman initially resisted, police intervention became necessary to escort him out of the premises. Subsequently, three truckloads of police arrived to evacuate all delegates without clear justification.
Despite the NGC's intention to reconvene after resolving the initial disruption, the police mandated the termination of the meeting and the closure of the premises, inhibiting further assembly. The NGC deems the heavy-handed police response unnecessary, especially as the issue had been resolved internally.
Prior arrangements had been made with the police to ensure a secure meeting environment, with minimal police presence requested. However, the excessive show of force by armed police and OSD officers raises concerns regarding the underlying motives behind such a display of power.
A significant agenda item was the reconsideration of the party's position in the previous election alliance with the ruling party, reflecting the majority's inclination to withdraw. However, a minority faction opposed this potential decision.
While acknowledging the police's duty to ensure public safety and property protection, the NGC emphasizes that the unprecedented armed police presence was excessive. The intervention to halt the meeting appeared disproportionate, given the manageable disruption caused by the individuals in contention.
The NGC reiterates its commitment to upholding the rule of law and complying with police directives to prevent further escalation. Nevertheless, the party remains resolute in its dedication to democratic principles and its right to assemble within the framework of the law.
Excessive policing tactics pose the risk of undue violence, potentially resulting in injury or loss of life. The NGC emphasizes unity in safeguarding liberties and advocating for a brighter future for all Sierra Leoneans within a democratic framework.
