One Dead, Several Injured in Tragic Accident at Makari Village

A journey from Makeni to Bo turned tragic when a vehicle lost control and veered off the road at Makari Village, somersaulting into a muddy plain. The accident claimed the life of one passenger, while several others sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment in Makeni.

This incident adds to the growing number of road crashes reported across Sierra Leone. Many of these accidents have been linked to speeding, unsafe overtaking, poorly maintained vehicles, and deteriorating road conditions. Authorities have repeatedly warned drivers—especially commercial operators—about the dangers of reckless driving and overloading.

Officials also highlight deeper challenges contributing to frequent road accidents, including inadequate driver training, weak enforcement of traffic laws, and a lack of proper road signs. In rural communities, unlit highways and worn-out road surfaces further increase the risk of night-time collisions.

With the holiday season approaching, a time when travel activity rises sharply, transport authorities are urging motorists to slow down, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, and strictly observe speed limits. Their hope is to prevent more avoidable tragedies on the nation’s roads.
