Police Provide Latest Update on Suspects in Custody Following Attempted Coup

Following the foiled coup attempt on November 26 targeting Freetown, Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu has provided an update on the individuals currently in police custody.

 

A total of 80 suspects are currently detained, including 50 serving military officers, 5 dismissed military officers, 7 serving police officers, 1 senior retired police officer, 15 civilians, and 1 correctional service officer. Notably, former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma is also among those detained.

 

Out of the detainees, 68 have already provided statements, swiftly forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office for further legal proceedings. However, 12 individuals are still undergoing questioning as part of the extensive investigation into the attempted coup.

 

Law enforcement remains dedicated to thoroughly investigating and bringing all involved parties to justice amidst this unprecedented event. The efforts underscore the commitment to maintaining stability and upholding the rule of law in Sierra Leone. The involvement of prominent figures, including a former president, adds complexity to the unfolding investigation, emphasizing the need for a meticulous and fair legal process.
