Sierra Leone Among Top African Nations in Governance Improvement
Sierra Leone has achieved significant strides in governance, ranking 23rd out of 54 African nations with an overall governance score of 53.0% in the latest African Governance Index. Over the past decade, Sierra Leone has shown one of the most substantial improvements on the continent, rising by 6.4 points and placing among the top 10 for governance progress.
This index assesses governance across Africa, covering political, social, economic, and environmental aspects essential to citizens’ well-being. Sierra Leone’s advancement is evident across four key areas: Human Development, Security & Rule of Law, Participation, Rights & Inclusion, and Foundations for Economic Opportunity.
The Human Development category, covering health, education, and social services, showed the most progress, reflecting increased government investment in citizen welfare. Improvements in Security & Rule of Law indicate enhanced public safety and legal framework adherence. Participation, Rights & Inclusion scores highlight increased citizen involvement in political processes and advances in civil rights. Although Foundations for Economic Opportunity remains a developing area, Sierra Leone has made strides toward building a more inclusive economic environment.
Sierra Leone’s steady governance improvement over the last decade underscores a commitment to sustainable development and accountability.
