APC Warns of Political Showdown Over Plans to Create New Cities and Districts in Sierra Leone
The All People’s Congress (APC) has sounded the alarm, warning that it won’t sit quietly if the government pushes ahead with plans to divide Sierra Leone into new districts and cities.
Speaking on Radio Democracy, Opposition Whip Abdul Karim Kamara made it clear that the party is ready to take political action should the government proceed with the proposed changes. “If they go ahead with the division, we will take the necessary political actions,” Kamara said. Though he didn’t reveal exactly what those actions would be, he hinted that the public would find out when the time comes.
Kamara criticized the government’s proposal, calling it “reckless” especially during a time when many parts of the country are already struggling to manage existing resources. He questioned the logic behind creating new administrative areas when current cities are still grappling with underfunded ministries and agencies.
The controversy erupted earlier this week after the government announced plans to add two more districts and possibly split Freetown, the capital. Lungi, a town known for housing Sierra Leone’s only international airport, is also being considered for elevation to city status.
Supporters of the move argue it would help fast-track development and bring services closer to more communities. But the opposition sees it differently. Critics say the real motive behind the restructuring is political — a strategy by the ruling SLPP government to increase its influence by creating more seats in Parliament and local councils.
The final decision is expected to come through a presidential declaration, according to Local Government Minister Tamba Lamina, although no timeline or further details have been provided yet.
As the nation awaits clarity, tensions are rising, with the APC standing firm in its opposition. One thing is certain: if these changes go forward, the political landscape in Sierra Leone could be in for a serious shake-up.
