Sierra Leone and UN Tourism Collaborate to Host Women in Tourism Regional Congress

The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs of Sierra Leone, in partnership with the UN Tourism organization, will host the Women in Tourism Regional Congress, a three-day event designed to transform opportunities for African women in the tourism industry. The congress, scheduled from October 29-31, 2024, aims to advance education, foster technological innovation, and improve access to financial resources for women.

Women account for 54% of the global tourism workforce and 70% in Africa, yet they often hold low-skilled, underpaid roles with limited prospects for advancement. Despite their numbers, only 25% of decision-making roles in tourism are filled by women, with the gap widening at higher leadership levels. Women face significant barriers, including limited access to education, finance, and markets, all exacerbated by societal norms and discriminatory laws.

In response, the congress will focus on mentoring, education, and fostering innovation through technology. It will also advocate for policies that support gender equality and help women assume leadership positions. This initiative aligns with Sierra Leone's recently launched 10-year National Strategic Tourism Plan, which promotes inclusivity under the “Tourism for All” campaign.

The congress will feature panel discussions, success stories from women-led ventures, and strategies for overcoming gender disparities in the industry. Experts will highlight how mentorship and education can elevate women's careers, while also discussing the role of technology in business growth. Specialized training in digital marketing and data analytics will encourage innovation and position women for success in an evolving market.

Additionally, a technical workshop will focus on improving women's access to finance. Entrepreneurs, managers, and leaders in the tourism sector will learn about securing microfinance, developing business plans, and building investor relationships to support long-term business growth.

The congress will bring together women ministers, entrepreneurs, artists, and key tourism industry figures. Participants will also experience Freetown’s rich culture, concluding with a vibrant carnival that celebrates the contributions of women to the tourism sector.
