Sierra Leone Parliament Investigates Leone Stars and Sports Officials Over Financial Mismanagement
The Sierra Leone Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has summoned key figures in the country’s sports sector, including members of the Leone Stars national football team, to answer questions regarding allegations of financial mismanagement between 2020 and 2024.
A hearing scheduled for today will examine the financial practices of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Ministry of Finance, the Accountant General’s Department, and travel agencies linked to sports activities.
Among those called to appear are the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, the current and former Executive Directors of the NSA, the Ambassador of Sports, and the Managing Directors of Star Travel Agency and Cinderella Travel & Tours. The Leone Stars technical team, including coaches, is also required to attend.
The inquiry will focus on payments, expenditures, and procedures related to player bonuses, competition records, and travel arrangements for sports events. All involved parties were instructed to submit financial records and relevant documentation by December 17.
In addition to financial scrutiny, the Leone Stars’ technical team will be asked to explain the criteria for player selection, fitness assessments, training methods, and team integration strategies. The PAC has warned that failure to comply with these requirements will result in consequences.
This investigation comes amidst growing concerns about transparency and accountability in managing sports funds in Sierra Leone. The results of the hearings are expected to provide insights into the financial management of the country’s sports institutions and could have a significant impact on future governance in the sector.
