SLCS Issues Ultimatum for Inmates Who Escaped on November 26 and Those Harboring Them
The Sierra Leone Correctional Service (SLCS) has recently issued a decisive ultimatum concerning the inmates who escaped from custody on November 26, 2023, as well as individuals providing them refuge.
In a press release, the SLCS underscores its ongoing collaborative efforts with the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) and the local community to locate and apprehend the escaped inmates. While some individuals have been recaptured or have voluntarily returned to custody, a notable number of inmates remain at large following the breach of security at the Pademba Road, Male Reintegration, and Female Correctional Centers in Freetown.
The SLCS has announced a grace period, extending until March 20, 2024, during which escaped inmates are encouraged to surrender themselves voluntarily. Failure to comply within this grace period will result in additional legal consequences, as stipulated by the SLCS Act 2014.
The press release emphasizes that aiding or concealing the whereabouts of an escaped inmate constitutes a serious offense under the law. Any individual found to be complicit in such actions will face legal repercussions.
Furthermore, the public is urged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing any pertinent information that could lead to the arrest of escaped inmates. Reports can be submitted to any Police Station, the Office of National Security (ONS), any Correctional Center in the country, or by contacting the SLCS’ Security and Operations Directorate at +23278517508. The SLCS stresses the importance of community involvement in ensuring the swift resolution of this matter, thereby safeguarding the safety and security of the broader community.
