Tragedy in Kambia: Two Young Lives Lost to Bondo Bush Ritual

In a solemn hearing at the Freetown court on June 24, 2024, the tragic deaths of Kadiatu Bangura, 17, and Salamatu Jalloh, 13, were brought to light following procedures allegedly linked to female genital mutilation (FGM) in Kambia's Bondo Bush. Dr. Samba Jalloh, Acting Medical Superintendent of Kambia Government Hospital, provided crucial testimony regarding the events.

Dr. Jalloh, responsible for both administrative oversight and clinical care at the hospital, presented findings from his medical examinations, attributing the deaths directly to clitoridectomy, a form of FGM. His on-site autopsy confirmed severe hemorrhaging and infection as immediate causes, leading to anemia and subsequent fatalities.

During the proceedings, defense attorney Lawyer Bayraytay raised objections to the authenticity of the medical report, prompting a brief adjournment for further review. Despite objections, Magistrate Samia ruled in favor of continuing the case, emphasizing its urgency given its pending status since March.

The court subsequently scheduled the next hearing for July 24, 2024, aiming to ensure justice prevails in this heartbreaking case.
