WESOFOD-SL and Trocaire Train 36 Teachers to Enhance Education Access for Disabled Children in Pujehun

 

The Welfare Society for the Disabled Sierra Leone (WESOFOD-SL), supported by Trocaire, recently organized a three-day training for 36 teachers, including head teachers from five primary schools in Pujehun District. Held at the Pujehun District Library Hall, this training is part of the Siobhan Education for All project, designed to improve educational access for disabled children.

 

Thomas K. Lebbie, Programs Manager at WESOFOD-SL, highlighted the need to equip teachers to address diverse learning needs. “This training is essential in creating an inclusive environment where every child, regardless of their abilities, can succeed,” he said.

 

Earlier in the year, WESOFOD-SL conducted an accessibility audit of 15 primary schools, choosing five based on specific criteria for accessibility improvements. These schools have since undergone modifications, including the addition of ramps, wider doors, and adapted toilets to enhance accessibility for disabled students.

 

Mohammed Sillah, District Coordinator for WESOFOD-SL, emphasized the challenges disabled children face in schools, noting that many are often overlooked. “This project seeks to change that narrative,” he said. Alongside the training, WESOFOD-SL has provided learning materials, assistive devices, and financial support to families of disabled children.

 

Mrs. Amie Rogers, head teacher of Holy Rosary Primary School, expressed gratitude for the program, stating, “For a long time, we neglected the needs of disabled children. Thanks to WESOFOD-SL’s training, we now see disabled children as individuals who deserve equal attention and support.”

 

This initiative represents a significant step toward creating a more inclusive education system in Pujehun, encouraging teachers to embrace and support all students in their classrooms.
