South Africa is pursuing a bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games, with the aim of bringing the event to Africa for the first time.
The country is one of seven nations expected to formally present their cases in November to the International Olympic Committee’s future bid committee. The other contenders are Qatar, India, Hungary, Turkey, Germany and South Korea.
Presentations planned for November
The presentations will form part of the process for selecting the host of the 2036 Games. The selection procedure is expected to conclude with a vote in 2029.
South Africa’s proposal is currently viewed as an outsider in the contest. Qatar is widely regarded as the leading contender, with India and Hungary also considered strong candidates.
Qatar seen as frontrunner
Qatar’s position is attributed to the perceived strength of its bid and the fact that Asia will not have hosted an Olympic Games since Tokyo 2020. A potential Olympics in Doha would, however, require a change from the traditional July-August scheduling period because of the heat.
India is regarded as Qatar’s main rival, although its bid is seen as having lost strength over the past year and a half.
South Africa’s campaign would carry historic significance if successful, making it the first African host of the Olympic Games. The seven countries will have the opportunity to put forward their cases before the committee in November, ahead of the vote scheduled for 2029.
