19-Year-Old Kush Smoker Allegedly Beaten to Death in Freetown

A tragic event has shaken the community of Fen-Fen Corner in Freetown, as a 19-year-old kush smoker, Joseph Wusu Kabia, was allegedly beaten to death. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, 29th February 2024, has left the family and community in shock.

According to reports from the Sierra Leone Police, the East-end Police Division is currently investigating the matter. It was reported that Joseph was allegedly beaten to death at the Fen-Fen Corner Community between Fourah Bay Road and Guard Street.

Joseph's father, also named Joseph Wusu Kabia, expressed his grief, stating that he last saw his son three days before he received the devastating news of his son's death. He shared that, based on the information he received, the Chairman and Chairlady of the community organized a team of boys to forcefully bathe all "filthy Kush smokers" and to beat them if they resisted.

The remains of the late Joseph Wusu Kabia have been conveyed to the Connaught mortuary for autopsy examination, and the matter is currently under investigation by the East End Police Division. Inspector Alimamy Ahmed Deen Conteh, the Information Officer of the division, has urged community members to refrain from taking matters into their own hands and to avoid violence. He emphasized that beating "Kush smokers" is not an appropriate measure and called on community stakeholders to partner with the police in sensitizing the youth to abstain from the use of harmful drugs, especially 'Kush.'

As the investigation continues, the tragic death of Joseph Wusu Kabia serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing drug abuse and violence in communities and promoting peaceful resolutions to conflicts. The family and community are left mourning the loss of a young life, highlighting the need for collective efforts to prevent such tragedies in the future.
