African Football League: New elite tournament sponsored by CAF

Initially, the tournament was open to 24 teams, divided into three groups with a playoff stage after round 16. Selection criteria included the team's recent performance, as well as the presence or absence of a youth academy and women's team.

The format of the tournament was decided. , Enyimba International (Nigeria), Wydad Casablanca (Morocco), Simba SC (Tanzania) and Al Ahly (Egypt). Each country could select only one representative based on tournament ranking points.

 

Opening

 

The African Football League opened on Friday 20th October at a packed Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Tanzania's commercial capital Dar es Salaam. The opening match pitted Simba Sports Club against Egyptian giants Al Ahly. The match was heated and ended in a 2-2 draw. Many soccer stars witnessed this historic event, especially FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

 

 

Prize Total

 

This FIFA-sponsored tournament has an impressive prize pool. By participating, all teams are guaranteed $1 million, semifinalists $1.7 million, silver medalists $3 million, and winners $4 million.
