Africa's Future Rests in the Hands of Its Youth, Says Former Sierra Leone President

Former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma has emphasized that Africa is rich in natural resources capable of sustaining the world, but he stressed that this alone is insufficient. He called on young Africans to become active and responsible citizens, both in their countries and across the continent, to unlock Africa's full potential.

Speaking at an event organized by the Rochas Foundation to mark the International Day of the Girl Child in Abuja, Koroma highlighted Africa's wealth in minerals, arable land, and other resources. However, he noted that only by transforming themselves into "meaningful citizens" can the youth help Africa thrive.

"We have everything imaginable in Africa," Koroma said. "Over 30 percent of the world's mineral deposits are here. We can feed the world for years to come, but only if the youth step up and commit to becoming responsible citizens, both nationally and as Africans."

The event also featured former Imo State Governor and Rochas Foundation founder, Rochas Okorocha, who expressed concern about the educational crisis facing Nigerian girls. He pointed out that 70 percent of Nigeria's out-of-school children are girls, largely due to cultural barriers that prevent their access to education.

Okorocha stressed the need for free education and community-driven efforts to ensure all children, particularly girls, receive an education. He urged the government to support volunteerism to help address this issue, praising the generosity of Nigerians and encouraging a stronger push for educational initiatives.

"Every child has a right to education, and denying that right destroys their future," he said. "Volunteerism is key, and the government should take the lead in promoting it."
