Alleged Assault on Six-Month-Old Baby in Bombali: Wife of Former SLPP Aspirant Under Scrutiny
Reports have emerged from Makeni, the Northern city of Sierra Leone, detailing a disturbing incident involving a six-month-old baby who was reportedly injured by individuals purportedly associated with the ruling Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP). The family of the infant alleges that the attack occurred on April 8th, 2024, leaving the child with a neck injury.
According to an exclusive interview conducted with the mother, Isha Turay, the baby, named Mamoud Kondeh, was struck on the neck by a stone allegedly thrown by Isatu S. Kamara, the wife of Abdul Camilo Kamara, a prominent SLPP member in the Bombali District. Other members of the same family, identified as Jeneba S. Ellie and Kadiatu Bangura, are also implicated in the incident.
Despite reporting the matter to the Mena Police Station in Makeni, Turay laments the lack of progress in securing justice for her son. She asserts that the perpetrators are flaunting their political connections, seemingly confident that no repercussions will befall them.
The delay in addressing the matter by law enforcement has left the family distressed and disillusioned. Turay expresses disbelief that her innocent child has become a victim of political violence, while those responsible roam freely.
Reacting to the incident, Peter Conteh, Chairman of the Human Rights Committee in Bombali District, condemns the alleged use of political influence to evade accountability. He calls on the police to expedite their investigation, highlighting a concerning trend of political elites exploiting their status with impunity.
In response, Camilo Abdul Kamara, the accused SLPP stakeholder, dismisses the allegations as baseless and refutes claims that his family targeted the infant. While admitting to a confrontation between his family and another residing in the same house as the victim, Kamara denies any involvement in causing harm to the child. He attributes the infant's neck condition to a pre-existing health issue.
Efforts to obtain updates from law enforcement officials have been met with silence, with inquiries directed to higher authorities remaining unanswered.
The incident underscores the need for swift and impartial justice, free from the influence of political affiliations. As the investigation unfolds, it is imperative to prioritize the well-being of the innocent and uphold the rule of law, regardless of political stature or connections.
