Alpha Khan Resigns from APC

Iconic opposition figure, Alhaji Alpha Bakarr Sahid Kanu has decamped the All People’s Congress party which he had allegiance for over 60 years. In a letter dated 28th, April 2023, the former flagbearer aspirant in the 2018 multi-tier elections made his feeling bare as he blames party hierarchy for excommunicating with him. “In the years during the APC's tenure in power in the period beginning September 2007 up to my quest for the highest position as the APC Party's nominee for Presidential Candidate for the 2018 Presidential Elections, my relationship with members of the Executive has been a roller coaster.” His letter reads in part.

He said he was the only member of the executive that was inexplicably removed from the position of National Publicity Secretary as his comrades retained their positions.  ‘Alpha Khan’, commonly known further expatiates the crux of the issue, “Until this day, as I write this letter, the top hierarchy of the Party has always done everything possible to make me feel and know that I was not welcome in any deliberations regarding the management of the Party.”

Alpha Khan refused to cast his future in the air with the firm belief that he could play his part in moving Sierra Leone forward in the area of political and socio-economic development for the benefit of Sierra Leoneans. However, he said, “…this is an aspiration that I am not likely to fulfill if I continue my membership in the APC.”

Alhaji Alpha Bakarr Sahid Kanu commenced his political journey as an admirer of the All People’s Congress in 1962. He became a supporter in 1967 and an active member of the party in 1991. Alpha Khan was a Member of Parliament between 2002 and 2007, representing the APC and Port Loko District in Parliament. He was the official spokesman of the APC even before the party was elected in 2007, a position he continued in until he was appointed as Minister of Presidential Affairs in 2007. Between October 2007 and February 2009, he was appointed as Minister of Mineral Resources. In December 2009, he was reappointed as Minister of Presidential and Political Affairs again. In 2012 he was appointed as Minister of Information and Communication.

Alhaji Alpha Kanu was appointed Resident Minister of the Northwest region with a cabinet rank on the 20th, of January 2022, after he served briefly as a Presidential Adviser to President Julius Maada Bio.
