Bo City Road Safety Committee Focuses on Solutions to Traffic Issues

On December 12, 2024, the Road Safety Committee held a crucial meeting at the Bo City Council Chamber to address the city's growing traffic and road safety challenges. Chaired by James Aruna, Head of Station for the Road Safety Corps in Bo City, the meeting brought together 27 stakeholders from key institutions, all committed to improving road safety.

Aruna opened the session by reaffirming the Committee’s dedication to creating a safer environment for road users. Secretary Mustapha Kpaka from Civil Society Organizations presented the minutes of the previous meeting and shared the suggestions from attendees.

District Security Coordinator, Swahibu Koroma, highlighted the importance of collaboration between security forces and other bodies to reduce traffic accidents, stressing that “the life you save today could be your own.”

Law enforcement representatives, including Divisional Traffic Officer Allen P. Cooper and Inspector Mohamed B. Mansaray, emphasized the necessity of strict enforcement to ensure safety on the roads.

Deputy Mayor Hawa Campbell of Bo City Council outlined plans to improve infrastructure and make the city a model of safety and progress. Key concerns raised during the meeting included overspeeding, poorly maintained vehicles, insufficient truck lighting, illegal garages, and street trading obstructing traffic.

To address these issues, the Committee proposed repainting zebra crossings, enforcing vehicle maintenance standards, cracking down on illegal garages, and regulating street trading. Stakeholders underscored the importance of compliance and collaboration to ensure these measures succeed.

The Committee’s efforts aim to reduce road safety risks and improve the overall safety and organization of Bo City’s traffic system.
